Land Between The Lakes Events

Attention all homeschoolers! Homeschool Day is a day packed full of hands-on STEAM activities to enhance your students' knowledge and understanding of the natural world. This year's theme is Art in Nature! Your students will stretch their artistic skills through activities that combine different art mediums with nature observation, biology, math, and more.

All ages are welcome. A full schedule of programming will be available by April 1st. All activities are included with regular Nature Station admission. No pre-registration is required.

We recommend at least a 2 hour visit to complete all activities. For more information or questions, please contact 270-924-2299.

Just like in the olden days, it takes a community to make our heirloom gardens productive and delicious. While you volunteer, you will get the chance to learn all about heirloom crops, old fashioned gardening techniques, and how the harvests were baked and canned. Although taking care of an old fashioned heirloom garden is lots of fun, it can also be hard work! Volunteers need to be comfortable with walking on uneven ground, working in outdoor conditions, and having limited access to cell phone service. Don't forget to pack a water, some sunscreen, and a snack.

Join the Friends of Land Between the Lakes and West Kentucky Amateur Astronomers as they celebrate International Astronomy Day. There will be kids activities, solar viewing and free planetarium shows. More to come!

Got any worn out clothes or blankets you're not using any more? Come on down to the farm to learn how to turn those scraps into something beautiful like a quilt. Learn the art of sewing and piecing scraps together in hexagonal shapes to create beautiful scrappy quilts. Also, while you're there take a look around at our other quilts on the farm or if sewing isn't for you grab a quilting coloring sheet and learn some interesting facts about the world of English Paper Piecing.

Spring Beauties: Spring wildflowers bring out some early butterflies and other pollinators. Let's poke around and see if we can glimpse some early pollinators in the gardens (11:30am-12:00pm). Derby Hat Craft: It's Turtle Derby time! Celebrate Nature Station style by making a hat to wear to today’s Kentucky Turtle Derby (2:00-3:00pm). Kentucky Turtle Derby: “Meet” the contestants, pick your favorite, and cheer for your turtle to cross the finish line. We will be joined by the Tennessee River Artist Blacksmith Association (TRABA) as we present various blacksmithing techniques. Learn How blacksmiths were able to forge metal before modern technology. The Land Between the Lakes region is dotted with the remains of a thriving iron production industry. Join us on the farm where we will reproduce the historic iron making process on a small scale using a small brick constructed furnace! Learn how Iron was processed, and turned into usable metal for implements around the farm!

Totally Turtles (11:30am - 12pm): Join us to meet several turtles native to Land Between the Lakes, see what makes each one unique, and even give them a pat on the shell! Shoreline Stroll (1:30pm - 2:30pm): Join a naturalist as we take a 1-mile hike on Woodland Walk trail, searching for the plants and animals that live along the shoreline of Honker Lake. Without refrigeration, there aren't many ways to preserve a large amount of meat. Salt and Smoke are our methods of choice on the farm. So come take in the sights, scents, and sounds of the smokehouse!

Tanning Hides (10am-12pm): Come learn the ancient art of hide tanning and unlock the ability to create something truly unique. Tree-mendous Hike (11:30am-1pm): Let's go for a 1-mile hike on one of our favorite trails! Beach Bum Bobcat (1:30pm-2pm): We can't take our bobcat to the beach, but maybe we can bring the beach to our bobcat! Let's add some sand, sun, water and maybe a beach ball to his environment and see what happens! Possum P.I. (3:30pm-4pm): Join this super sleuth with the super sniffer as she finds clues, goes through obstacles, and solves the case of the missing treats!
