A Jaunty Trek Through the Trees

Earth Day Celebration

Celebrate Earth Day at the Doran Arboretum! New this year the Friends of the Arboretum are partnering with the Four Rivers Watershed Sustainability group to bring the community a Bigger and Better Celebration. We will still be having our Big Flower Sale, yearly Arbor Day Tree Planting, and Kite Festival, but we will now have over 30 Booths set up for people of all Ages to Enjoy. We will have Storytime for the kids, Animal with Energy for all, and Beau Dodson will present on Climate for the Environmental Enthusiasts. Like last year, The 5k and 1 mile Mutt Strut will kick off the day, bright and early. The greenhouses will be open for business at 9am and booths will be ready for visitors at 10 am. Lunch will be available for just $5!

The Dover Hotel at Fort Donelson

The Dover Hotel, constructed between 1853-1855, was a witness to the booming days of river boat traffic and was the meeting site for one of the most important surrenders during the American Civil War. Join Park staff as they tell the story of the Dover Hotel and the events that the building witnessed throughout its life as a hotel, hospital, and meeting place.

Martin Cook, a former piano player for the Kingsmen and a chemistry teacher at Swain High School in Bryson City, NC, formed the Inspirations in 1964 with several of his teenage students: Archie Watkins, Ronnie Hutchins, Jack Laws and Dean Robinson. The Inspirations became full-time in 1969, a year after hosting their first "Singing In The Smokies" event. Bass singer Mike Holcomb joined them in 1972.

The plow has long since made its rounds across the growing field. Effective as the plow is, it couldn't turn every bit of soil. In the spaces it missed, these liminal corners where the crops border other lands, the wild takes root. These places are fairy corners. Wildflowers bloom here unbothered by the bustle of cultivation. Come out and learn about some plant lore. Learn why they're called fairy corners through a bit of folklore, too. A peaceful place is never faraway.

The game graces is an historical outdoor game popular in the 18th and 19thcentury. The game is named after the Three Graces, goddess of Greek and Roman mythology. Fort Donelson Presents "The Keys to the Gateway Into Her Own Territory"

Fort Donelson National Battlefield - Education Pavilion near 120 Fort Donelson Park Rd, Dover

The Campaign for Forts Henry and Donelson involved navigating almost 70 miles of rivers and roads, as well as coordinating thousands of troops, a river fleet, and almost a dozen commanders. Fighting took place in multiple areas over a sizable portion of land and on the water. This complex campaign skyrocketed Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant to fame and marked the beginning of the end for the Confederacy in the western theater.

This "Battlefield in a Box" program is an interactive visual program designed to allow visitors to participate in telling the story. Visitors attending the program can expect to better understand what took place and where it happened while having a memorable experience! The program is open to groups and people of all ages and is an excellent program for families.

Buglers played an important role in the American Civil War. They issued daily orders throughout camp, provided orders on the battlefield, and helped rally troops. Buglers were often adults, but some were teenagers and a few even younger.

Reflections of What Was in Watercolor with Tim Pafford

Construction of Kentucky Dam began on July 1, 1938 and Tennessee Valley Authority then began efforts to document impacted communities such as Johnsonville. Join artist Tim Pafford as we use watercolor to remember those who paid a price for progress.

Celebrate Spring reflecting on a time before as you paint your very own watercolor of a piece of Johnsonville history, painting what was once part of the past. You'll receive instructions from renowned artist and teacher Tim Pafford. Learn techniques of painting and make it your very own. This will be a 3 to 3 1/2 hour instructional time. Fort Donelson Presents "The Keys to the Gateway..."

Fort Donelson National Battlefield - Education Pavilion near 120 Fort Donelson Park Rd, Dover

"The Keys to the Gateway into her own Territory"

The Campaign for Forts Henry and Donelson involved navigating almost 70 miles of rivers and roads, as well as coordinating thousands of troops, a river fleet, and almost a dozen commanders. Fighting took place in multiple areas over a sizable portion of land and on the water. This complex campaign skyrocketed Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant to fame and marked the beginning of the end for the Confederacy in the western theater.

This "Battlefield in a Box" program is an interactive visual program designed to allow visitors to participate in telling the story. Visitors attending the program can expect to better understand what took place and where it happened while having a memorable experience! The program is open to groups and people of all ages and is an excellent program for families.

Programs are subject to staffing availability. In the interest of safety, in the event of inclement weather, programs are subject to cancelation. Information as to program status will be available online, or by contacting the Ranger office at 931-232-0576.

Caravan Tour at Fort Donelson

Do you want an in-depth tour of the 1862 battle of Fort Donelson? If so, then join a Fort Donelson National Battlefield Park Ranger on a caravan tour of the battlefield! The tour will cover the goal behind capturing Fort Donelson, the movement from Fort Henry to Fort Donelson, the fighting that took place on February 13, 14, and 15, 1862, and the surrender of Confederate forces on February 16, 1862. Please be aware that the tour will last about 3 hours.

The tour will involve driving to various sites on park property and include light walking either on pavement or on a few areas with uneven ground. Because of limited parking at several locations, reservations are required. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early. This tour will be offered on the third Saturday of every other month.

The Dover Hotel, constructed between 1853-1855, was a witness to the booming days of river boat traffic and was the meeting site for one of the most important surrenders during the American Civil War. Join Park staff as they tell the story of the Dover Hotel and the events that the building witnessed throughout its life as a hotel, hospital, and meeting place.

Hop on the Moneymaker Trail during Thanksgiving week and crank out this fun challenge by running, biking, or walking on a full belly! Beginning November 22nd, the Moneymaker Trail will be marked off with a start line and finish line for a 1.5-mile trail. Ride it, walk it, or run it as many times as you'd like during November 22nd-30th, and mark your time down on the leaderboard (there will be better markers this year). This friendly competition is a way to get out and get active during the Thanksgiving holiday!
