Great American Trail Race

Mar 16, 2026 - 6:00am - 6:30pm

W Commerce Ave - W Commerce Ave, Grand Rivers

There are four distances to choose from: 50 mile, 60KM, Marathon, and 23KM. They all begin together, along the shoreline of beautiful Kentucky Lake, and proceed about 2 miles to the fabulous Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, and the trail head. The Canal Loop is approximately 11.3 miles, mostly single-track, nicely packed dirt track consisting of rolling hills on the Lake Barkley side of the course, and larger hills on the Kentucky Lake side. The course yields spectacular views of both lakes, and is very runnable. Sorry, we are dog owners, and love them, but dogs are not allowed to run or walk with any participant for insurance purposes. We suggest you come early, or stay later and walk the trails with your pups. They'll love it.

Frolic in the Flowers Spring Hike

Mar 21, 2026 - 10am-1pm

Johnsonville State Historic Park - 90 Nell Beard Rd, New Johnsonville

Join staff for a morning walking along the banks of the Duck River, searching hillsides and drainages for wildflowers. This is the first program of it's kind at Link Farm. Because this site is not open to the public without being accompanied by a ranger or archaeologist, this hike is a unique opportunity to see the diverse resources that the site offers. While at Link Farm, we will also discuss the primary cultural resources that the preservation of this site is based upon (a brief description can be seen below.)

By approximately A.D. 1150 a large prehistoric mound and village center was constructed at the confluence of the Duck and Buffalo Rivers in Humphreys County by Native Americans that archaeologist refer to as the Mississippian culture. The site, known as the Link Farm, consists of four large mounds surrounding a central plaza and an occupation area at the top of a steep bluff overlooking the Duck River Valley. This ancient settlement, prominent throughout eastern North America as a center of prehistoric trade, declined and disappeared by A.D. 1400.

Please meet at the Johnsonville State Historic Park Visitor Center at 10am for a brief introduction and to cover details before leaving for the Link Farm site by 10:30am. Participants will travel by personal vehicle to the Link Farm site.

We will be walking over moderate terrain with short distances of steep elevation change for a total distance of approximately one mile. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring a small pack with snacks, water, etc. There are no restrooms at the Link Farm site. Please do not bring pets. The tour will be cancelled in the event of severe weather.

From tomatoes to beans, the homeplace garden offers visitors an opportunity to taste the 1800's.
